Caring for Fine Hair at Home - Tips from Salon Stylists

Beware of overwashing

Our Founder Paul Windle says, “Very often, people with fine hair wash it too often with too strong a shampoo. This is also one of the reasons I’m against detox shampoos. Between using detox shampoos and overwashing, you can create what I’ve termed the “rebound effect. “It stimulates the scalp to secrete sebum, and your hair then becomes limp and greasy, so you wash it again, and the cycle continues.”

So, break the cycle! Adjust your washing routine and use products specifically formulated for fine hair.

Dilute Your Shampoo

Here’s a tip most brands won’t tell you.

Whatever shampoo you’re using, Paul recommends that you try diluting it with a bit of water before applying it to your scalp. This reduces its strength while still cleansing effectively.

For fine hair, consider specialised products like our Fortifying Shampoo and Conditioner. These are formulated with wheat protein and bonding agents to strengthen the hair and increase its diameter.

A standout feature of this shampoo is the inclusion of rooibos tea, which is known to stimulate hair growth. For best results:

  • Shampoo twice.
  • The first wash cleanses the scalp and hair.
  • The second wash allows the rooibos tea to work its magic—leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing.

Boost Scalp Circulation

Healthy hair starts at the scalp, and good circulation is crucial in stimulating hair growth. Rooibos tea can help, but there are simple daily habits that can further enhance blood flow to your scalp:

  • Exercise: Regular physical activity promotes overall circulation.
  • Sauna and Cold Water: Alternate heat from a sauna with cold water on your head to invigorate blood flow.
  • Inversions: Yoga poses like downward dog or simply hanging your head below your body can encourage circulation.

Remember, your hair’s nutrients come from your blood, so getting that blood flow to your scalp is essential.

Get Plenty of Iron

Iron is crucial for healthy hair growth because it helps red blood cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles. A lack of iron can lead to hair thinning and even hair loss.

Include foods like spinach, kale, lentils, chickpeas, beans, red meat, poultry, and fish in your diet. If you want to make that iron work harder for you, pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C sources (like oranges, strawberries, or bell peppers) to enhance absorption.

If you struggle to get enough iron from food alone, consider an iron supplement. Always consult your doctor before starting supplements to ensure you’re taking the right amount for your needs.

A well-balanced diet rich in iron can make a noticeable difference to your hair’s strength and overall health.

Don’t overdo conditioner

When conditioning fine hair, less is more. Apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends to avoid weighing down your roots. This keeps your hair light and voluminous while still delivering the necessary hydration and protection.

Master Your Blow-Dry Technique

Ever wondered how salons achieve that perfect, bouncy blow-dry? The secret lies in the technique—and yes, you can recreate it at home! When it comes to fine hair, the focus should be on creating lift and volume at the roots without overheating or weighing your hair down with too many styling products. Here's how to master the process:

Before you start blow-drying, apply a lightweight volumising product, such as Windle LAB fortifying spray to damp hair. These products help build body and hold without adding weight.

Set your hairdryer to a low heat and medium speed. Fine hair is delicate, and too much heat can cause damage or flatten your style.

Lift sections of hair at the roots using your brush, and angle the airflow towards the roots to create volume. Hold the brush close to your scalp, gently pulling upwards as you dry each section .Use your fingers to tousle the roots while drying for a more natural, textured lift.

This technique ensures your hair looks fuller and more textured without relying on excessive styling products.
